Marlene Weisman

I'm a Brooklyn, NY based artist working in collage, painting, drawing, and 3D assemblage. I find endless inspiration incorporating everyday materials into my pieces. I find that the playful use of ephemera in art can make serious universal statements about contemporary values, material culture, feminism, and can reflect a society that sometimes seems to be spinning out of control.  My experiences as an artist living through some cool eras of New York City, and as a career person and mother has provided me with a range of subject matter to express.

My work is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art, and was exhibited in the Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983. My work has also been exhibited in the Islip Art Museum, BRIC Media House, Site:Brooklyn Gallery, NARS Foundation Gallery, 313 Butler, Shapeshifter Lab, Central Booking Gallery, and Gallery 440. I've had a solo exhibition at the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, titled Making The Mundane Marvelous: Transformations in Mixed Media in 2014.

Besides my fine art practice, I am a graphic designer. My career began in the music industry, where I designed the graphics for rock, punk, and jazz artists. After that I got interested in television comedy, and ended up in an amazing gig: working in-house at Saturday Night Live for 7 seasons, designing the on-air graphics, props, and sketch logos.  My current graphic design work includes DVD package design, book covers, brochure design and other projects, many relating to silent film preservation.
